All this time I've been pasting the pipe character from other sites like a sucker....Doh!
Check it out! Right between your shift and Z keys.

:?
Funny, you use it every day but never really look at the thing.
Re: Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Right between your shift and Z keys.
My pipe is below the backspace. Shift+backslash
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
I suppose next your gonna' tell me your "quotation" sign isn't on the number 2 key.
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
nope. quotations is to the left of the enter key.

Not everyone uses Windoze, and not all keyboards are the same.
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Hmm, that's why, I guess they overlay little symbols on the keys ,sort of helps you get a feel for what they may print.
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
...that's the lowest form of wit, you know
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
I know, just couldn't resist it

For us with english keyboards, does anyone know how to get the three characters on the key under escape? (The tilde key)
I can get this:
`
and this
¬
but not the one that looks like a broken pipe (or a staple).
Any ideas?
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
¦¦¦¦¦¦ this one ?
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Exactly. How do I get it?
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Control + Alt = ¦¦¦¦
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Thats the one I pressed, I was wondering why it wasn't a broken pipe.
|||\\||\\||\||\\\\\\\||\\\\\\
Nope can't get the broken pipe.
Not everyone uses Windoze, and not all keyboards are the same.
That was the gag. I mentioned a key that I knew was different, incidently my Gfriends mac is laid out like that.
OK! what av I pressed now, my @ and " seem to have swapped keys. Hmmmmm (((((!!!scratch head icon!!!)))))
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
You've set up the keyboard wrong - either US instead of UK, or vice-versa.
¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¬¬¬¬``````

" " @ @
I think it was something I pressed, their must be a shortcut to change layouts on the keyboard as it is now correct. (I know how to set up a PC)
Still can't get the broken pipe, not that I actually need to use it, just currious to figure out why
Control + Alt = ¦¦¦¦
ain't workin'.
[edit]
```¬¬¬¬¬`¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦``. What the *beep*!
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
It turns out the broken pipe is on the key before number 1! key at the top left.
The key in question shows ` ¬ | on it. But types ` ¬ ¦
and between my z and shift keys is a key that has on it
\ ¦
but types
\ |
I seem to have set everything up correctly all my language and keyboard options, but it may have something to do with using the generic xp driver instead of a specific one.
English keyboard bought from PC World with no drivers.
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
You are all quite clearly insane ¦¦
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
ALT-SHIFT will change your keyboard's language setting... I have a french/english keyboard
Shift-2: @
alt-shift
Shift-2: "
"Ã" I can get with two presses without alt-135 on the french setting however it beeps up all my quotation marks and my "<" ">",
I have to get those from under the backspace...
It sucks 'cause when I went to school and had to type projects (went to a french school) I had to use the french keyboard and I didn't know how to use it so it would always take me twice the time to finish hahaha
Roll on trouble-free voice recognition, that's all I can say!
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Indeed - "Computer, can I have one of them 'odd' forign C's with the squigle underneath please?"
Also voice recognition would stop me sending emails whilst too drunk to talk, which can only be a good thing!
Does that C even have an english term?
Sounds like you have a UK printed keyboard in UK configuration
Standard 101/102 MS UK keyboard layout key to the left of '1' shows the pipe command symbol ¦ and is accessed in the uk layout with AltGr key, key to the left of 'z' is the solid pipe | accessed with shift.
Your key access seems backwards but is right you have an UK printed keyboard and are using UK language layout, your key combinations are MS UK it's just the printed layout that conflicts.
Well it's not like keyboards come with a manual...well they don't.
Only the members of this forum could make a two-page thread out of someone's discovery of a friggin keyboard character
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
No I guess they don't need one really, a process of trial and error usually suffices.
Hmm, two pages on the discovery of a keyboard character, says it all really, at the moment
While we're on the topic of stupid useless keyboard keys, what's the point of the following?
The three different marks on what us gamers affectionately call the 'tilde' key
Caps Lock
The weird arrow above the 6 key
SysRq and Break (probably a throwback to the 60s and DOS no doubt)
The wavy line key (above the hash)
Insert
AltGr
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Insert is simple even though it can sometimes be annoying...
Instead of pushing the text forward it replaces it... comes in hand when you want to replace spaces with dashes or things of that nature but when you're writing a report it's just good to accidently activate and delete half a paragraph >_<
Joseph, wasn't the discovery of the pipe character a premise for a Seinfeld episode? If not, it well could have been.
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
I'm not sure but it certainly should have been.
Wonder what problems it would have inadvertently caused?
Incidently it's the only American sitcom I like.
The three different marks on what us gamers affectionately call the 'tilde' key
For two of them no idea - but "~" is the tilde. And on uk keyboards its shift+#. ` is another of those things that allows us unsophisticated english speakers to make fancy continental letters in Word.
The weird arrow above the 6 key
I call it "hat", but I guess our european cousins probably has some really sophisticated name for it, like circumflex. Its really useful for pointing at
sumething on the line above.
^
(thats a spelling error)
SysRq and Break (probably a throwback to the 60s and DOS no doubt)
They used to have meaning (and probably still do) in terminal emulators.
The wavy line key (above the hash)
That's a tilde.
Insert
In most editors, it will toggle between overwrite and insert mode. Hit it once and start typing in the middle of some text.
AltGr
This is a new one, I think M$ invented it with windows. I guess super clever windows programmers can make different things happen than when "Alt" is used.
Gee, I'm a font of knowledge today.
Holy *beep* I discovered the |||||||||||||||||||| key.
Hmm, it's our American cousins that usually have a habit of fancy names; 'Octothorpe' ?
The 'Hat' is also known as a 'Caret'
'Break' used to be used with the ^caret or control key to break out of a running programme or one stuck in a loop
'SysRq' was I think only applicable if the key had been programmed and could have different purposes but was to do with system interrupts
AltGr is just an extra shift key and is sometimes I believe just labeled as Alt but on the right of the spacebar but will still act as an extra shift. the correct extra shift combo has always been ctrl+alt +key the most famous combo being the old 'Three fingered salute' so the pipe command broken should be selectable using ctrl + alt + `
This brings back happy memories of a time before windows with just that lovely grey screen with it's blinking c:/> prompt in the top left corner , happy days, Dos , batch files, understanding how an operating system worked.
Now this really is enough on a rather minor subject of key discovery gone on far too long as many posts seem to nowadays
Oh unless anyone can explain where I can find the 'Any' key it doesn't appear to be on my keyboard I'm guessing it must be hidden in a strange key combo somewhere.
Hugo.
Incidentally, Windows key+break brings up the system properties.
