Okay, I've done a little research and it all tells me the evils of hiding or editing the window status, but I have a legit reason to do it. I want to set up a puzzle in which readers must travel via hidden word links revealing additional text each time until they reach their goal. These links are easily hidden in IE with the window.status code, but stubbornly won't go away in FF which gives them a way to cheat Sad Does anyone have a suggestion?
I've seen banners that effectively hide it, could that be because they are in flash?

In Firefox

In Firefox preferences->content->enable javascript->advanced, the user must explicitly allow the status bar to be hidden. That is beyond authoring control. You'll have to ask the user to reconfigure his browser.
