Having an IE 6 issue
Posted: Fri, 2008-05-16 21:56
This a first post for me so first hello and thanks in advance. I will also do the best to provide everything you would need to help. The issue I am having is actually more than one. The most important to me is fact that my site is not displaying correctly in IE6. It is accruing in both my news page and my bio page. If I could fix one, I could easily fix the other. The site works fine in FF, IE7, and Netscape 8. The problem is the main content on left isn't showing up in place next to my sidebar items. It's blank but if you scroll all the way down it appears there.
I'm not sure if it is a xtml issue or css. I have validated my css to be correct. my xtml has 3 errors in 1.1 on the news page and 10 on the bio page. So I do want to clean all that up. One issue appears to be my doctype but for whatever reason it seems to look good, so I'm not sure what to do to fix it. The error says it is going into translation mode.
I'll be completely honest here when I say that I'm not a designer nor do I want to be, I know little about rules but I do want my code to be clean so the majority of browsers out there can look at my site.
Here. is the Code for [url]lonniebruhn.com/news.html

<p>By now I wouldn’t be surprised if all of the fans I once had have moved on to bigger and better hobbies than stopping in to check on site updates from a drunk and funny douche-cripple. So why even try to writing a bunch of *beep* pretending that I have viewers? I guess the fantasy of a huge fan base is better than fantasy of journaling to the occasional accidental drop in. (which is a less attractive thought and even more unlikely possibility.) </p>
<p>At one time the fan base was pretty good, I even had people who drove many hours just to see the show. Some still do, but when you don’t update the site with new content many forget and move on.</p>
<p>A couple of reasons why I didn’t do much updating before is because Myspace is so much easier than the newsletter and to update, the second and biggest reason is the other site sucked ass! It was sloppy looking it was designed to make things easier on updates but was far from the case. It was so *beep*ing hard to update instead I just would look at porn, jack off, and attempt to suck my own cock. (More on that another day, maybe.)</p>
<p>…Now I'll just have to both.</p>

<h1>2008 Biography </h1>

<p><strong>L</strong>onnie Bruhn has quickly become one of the edgiest comedians working today. Unafraid to speak out onstage the subjects and taboos that most people will only whisper… to their psychiatrist. His humor is the ultimate escape from the bland days of political correctness, overused premises, and nonsensical bull that most comics get by with. Lonnie refuses!!!<strong> </strong></p>
<p> Born with Cerebral Palsy, Lonnie Bruhn shows to all of us that he’s not crippled. The world is. Bruhn proves why he is a role model to anyone with a disability… and anyone that has ever done anything really perverted and was too ashamed to tell the story… Come see for yourself why Bruhn has built one of the most loyal fan bases in the country.</p>

<h1>Press Clippings:</h1>

<p><strong>S</strong>o the majority of comedy shows can be a full-on tossup, either rum-and-Coke-spewing-from-your-nose funny or utterly painful to the point that the closest thing resembling a laugh is really just an effing hiccup. But here at <em>WW</em>, we like the edgy *beep*. And we know you do, too. Lonnie Bruhn and The Cripple XXX Comedy Tour is so offensive, so crass, so derogatory, in fact, that most joints won't even book the freakin' thing. And yes, one of the two comedians, Lonnie Bruhn, a native Portlander, was born with cerebral palsy. But don't feel sorry for him—he's sure to get the last laugh. --<strong class="style1"><em> Willamette Week 2006</em></strong></p>

<p><strong>I</strong>t's become gradually clear that Portlander Lonnie Bruhn is a standup comedian who doesn't hold back. drop the doctype down to
Posted: Fri, 2008-05-16 22:19
drop the doctype down to 1.0, as 1.1 must be served as application/xhtml+xml and IE can't grok that. It may look like your serving as such, but check your headers.
The fix is simple. Feed IE6 a -3px margin-right on column1. IE has a bad habit of adding an additional 3px margin to floats (making them no longer fit side by side in their containers).
* html #column1 {margin-right: -3px;
}

wolfcry, thanks, I drop to 1.0 but how do I fo that, by just changing the 1. 0 or is there more to that?
As for the code you provided, I will place that in my css and go from there. I'll report back.

The doctype to use for xhtml
Posted: Sat, 2008-05-17 22:42
The doctype to use for xhtml 1.0 strict is
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
But frankly I prefer html 4.01 for which the strict doctype would be:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN""http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
Either one will put IE and other browsers into standards rendering mode.
I prefer html because the truth is browsers all deal with the xhtml code as if it were html anyway, so why kid ourselves, and the syntax is slightly easier.
In practice servers must all serve xhtml as text anyway because IE can't handle it served as xml.
I could change my plea to guilty,
but I don't think it would stick.

Ed, thank you as well. I did research prior to this post you left and changed it xhtml 1.0 and I am happy to say that my site was validatd. I still don't know yet if the 1E6 issue was fixed because I have to drive over to my x wife's house to look at it through IE6 because Microsoft has to embed the browser into the windows and this computer has IE7 on it. I'm sorry but I will not put an emulator on this computer just to test compatibility. That is a serious pain. Which is comparable to visiting my x-wife. When will Microsoft start writting for the users, developers and the standards so we all can work on stuff without having to go out of our way because of their code. I hope they are happy, oh how I love to visit her. Talk about backwards compatibly.(how ironic, isn't it.)

I finally was able to look
Posted: Sun, 2008-05-18 23:30
I finally was able to look at this in IE6 again and that strip of code worked foe everything but the bio page. The news and media pages were fixed with this but the bio page still pushes everything in the main content area down to the bottom. I don't know why it works on news and media but not bio. The only thing I can think of is my formatting is a little different on bio. So I will also supply my css code too.
The bio page link is here: http://lonniebruhn.com/bio.html
The html code is here:

<h1>2008 Biography </h1>
<p> </p>
<p><strong> </strong>“<strong>H</strong>e's top-grade funny. Not just ‘he's pretty good but I don't really watch after the first night’ palatable, but right on your ass funny. Really funny.”<br />

<p><strong>L</strong>onnie Bruhn gives a black-eye to comedy.<br />
<span class="style8">-- Jim Short</span></p>

His act is so relentlessly dirty that few comedy clubs will even book him, though thankfully for us, Sabala's isn't one of them<span class="style1"> --<strong class="style1"><em> The Portland Mercury 2005</em></strong></span></p>

That page still has the transitional doctype. Try changing it to the strict one I gave you. Then correct any resulting html errors and see what happens.

Well I changed over to strict 1.0 had 10 errors, cleaned them up and it validates fine, but for whatever reason my bio page is not fixed, all the other pages look fine in IE 6 but the bio page is not turning out at all.

Well I really can't help you much more since I no longer have IE6 on my system and it looks pretty much identical in IE7.
Maybe someone smarter will chime in.

I was afraid of that. It's tuff because every time I want to test it I have to drive over to my my x wifes house. The weird part is it looks fine in 1E6 on everything but the bio page. I think I'm going to redo the boio page and see what happens.

Ed, I got it fixed on IE6.
Posted: Wed, 2008-05-21 21:14
Ed, I got it fixed on IE6. What I did was set everything up over at my x wife's so I could really work on the issue and test. I copied my my news.html template and started from scratch and slowly put in what I had on the bio to reproduce the error so I could isolate the issue. I did that and noticed that in the code there was some extra code. The string was present for one. Well that's when I thought about it, the bio info I copied from either word docs or from other sites plus I had also added some extra inline css specific to the style on my bio page that wasn't jiving with IE6 at all. So what I did was took the bio portion that was the real culprit and placed it in notepad to clean up the extra junk, cleaned up some of the inline css issues and now it shows correctly in FF IE6, IE7, Netscape8 it validates in 1.0 xtml strict and I am happy.
I knew it had to be something off in that page because all my other pages behaved. In order to really fix it I had to set up with IE6 available to me for testing.
Thanks for your assistance though. It really helped a lot.

I congratulate you for applying good debugging techniques. Yes IE6 is wont to be wonky about white space and comments and it is a very good idea to make sure you feed it as little of either as possible.
